BOOKKEEPING FOR SMALL SERVICE BUSINESSES

Your work is the business. Bookkeeping should be the short part.

ConsulBooks turns bank and credit-card activity into a guided routine: connect, organize, answer the exceptions, and export. It is built for owners who need clean records—not another full-time software project.

THE PROBLEM WITH “ALL-IN-ONE”

More modules do not always mean a better fit.

A small service business may only need to capture bank and card transactions, distinguish business from personal activity, keep categories consistent, and deliver understandable records to an accountant.

Full accounting suites can be the right choice when the same system must also run payroll, inventory, bill pay, invoicing, projects, or multiple operational users. ConsulBooks is for the owner who does not need that breadth today.

FOUR VISIBLE STEPS

A setup path an owner can finish.

01

Connect the accounts used for business

Choose bank and credit-card accounts inside Plaid Link. ConsulBooks never receives the online-banking password. CSV import remains available as a fallback.

02

Confirm the business context

Enter the business name, industry, entity type, accounting method, and confidence threshold. Those settings belong to this workspace.

03

Let rules handle what is known

Saved vendor rules run before broader categorization. New activity receives a category, confidence score, and plain-English reason.

04

Answer exceptions and keep the record

Uncertainty waits in a review queue. Approved activity creates balanced journal entries and remains traceable through reports, exports, and audit history.

OWNER QUESTIONS

Know the fit before connecting.

What kinds of service businesses fit ConsulBooks?

The current workflow fits owner-operated and small U.S. service businesses with straightforward bank and card transactions, such as consultants, agencies, independent practices, local professional services, and contractors without complex inventory.

Does ConsulBooks file taxes or replace a CPA?

No. ConsulBooks is bookkeeping software, not a CPA, tax preparer, attorney, payroll provider, or tax-filing service. Review exports with the professional responsible for your financial statements and filings.

Can I connect more than one account?

Yes. Plaid can bring selected accounts from a connected institution into the workspace. The planned Starter tier supports up to two institutions and 500 transactions per month.

What happens when ConsulBooks is unsure?

The transaction stays in the Needs your input queue with a suggested category, confidence score, and reason. Your approval can teach a private vendor rule for the same business.
